Are Parents Obliged to Raise Their Adult Children
Generally, parents should raise their minor children or pay their child maintenance until their children reach maturity, i.e., the age of eighteen. This means that parents’ obligation to raise their children end when their children finish high school education and parents are not obliged to pay the costs for their children’s college education.
After their children become adults, they are no longer entitled to claim child support from their parents even if they go to college.
Provided, however, that if a child has reached the age of eighteen years but has not finished high school education, their parents are obliged to raise the child and pay his education costs until the child graduates from senior high school.
Provided, further, that if a child has reached the age of eighteen years but has lost or partially lost the ability to work, or is unable to maintain a normal life independently due to an accident or other reasons not attributable to the child himself, his parents are still obliged to raise the child until they both die. After their deaths, the child may claim all or a bigger share of his parents’ estate, and his elder brothers and sisters are obliged to raise him.
